There are carried out fundamental and scientific applicable investigations in the field of ecology, silviculture, conservation of forest flora and fauna, structure and functioning of forest ecosystems and populations, their conservation, reproduction and sustainable development.

The strategy about development is related to the national peculiarities and traditions in the forestry, and to the regional character of Balkan forests as well as to the criteria of International organisations such as FAO, IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organisations), EFI (European Forest Institute) and the active European Programmes EUFORGEN, COST, INCO-Copernicus, etc.
